Discipleship and Care

Coordinator: Stan King

Pastoral Care

As followers of Jesus, we are all called to ‘Love each other as I have loved you’ which Jesus commands us to do. (John 15:12) As we reflect on the compassion we have been shown, our natural instincts should be to want to care, love and support each other. We all have a responsibility to care for each other and be listening for the Holy Spirit who may nudge us to respond to any needs we are aware of with encouragement, practical care and prayer.

Pastoral Care is coordinated by our pastor. He tries to engage a team of people to ensure that each person feels loved, valued and cared for, and receives the support they may need to support them practically, emotionally and spiritually.

VEC provides various ways for care to be shown in practical ways . We provide meals through our meal ministry and transportation of some of the elderly.

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him and let your lives be built on him." (Colossians 2:6-7.). As followers of Jesus, we are all engaged in discipleship, which is the process of growing in our relationship with God and becoming more Christ-like.

This lifelong process includes:

  • Studying God’s word and putting what we learn into practice. As we read and learn we grow closer to God in our understanding, and are open to God revealing himself to us.
  • Ensuring that we spend time alone in God’s presence, experiencing the intimacy which grows from that relationship. Sometimes carving out times away from our usual distractions, which may involve exploring retreats or quiet days.
  • Worshipping Him in various ways to express our hearts to Him, and hear His heart towards us.
  • Speaking and listening to God in prayer, alone and with others. Going deeper in our experience of prayer.
  • Being willing to respond when the Holy Spirit reveals the need for us to repent, surrender and forgive as part of our ongoing growth and transformation.
  • Being open to God revealing where we need to be healed, set free and restored, and responding.
  • Sharing life with others and together learning, encouraging and supporting one another.
  • Building relationships where we are accountable, and where we trust each other enough to be able to bring, and accept challenge.
  • Interceding for others in prayer as we hear the Holy Spirit leading us.
  • Joining together as church to worship and be a family of believers.

As we grow as disciples, this leads to:

  • Finding where we fit in the ‘Body of Christ’, developing our gifts and being willing to use those gifts and availability to serve others. (see the Serving and Gifts page)
  • Living lives which reflect Jesus, and being the fragrance of Jesus, reflecting His character and speaking of the hope we have wherever He has placed us. (see the Mission and Outreach page)

We provide people an opportunity to be disciple through individual mentoring relationships coordinated through the pastor. As well, various groups are organized and meet regularly with the intent to build community amongst its participants and help them grow in their faith and life as disciples of Jesus.
